Just a week ago I wrapped up my interview with Dr. Brenda Cassellius for this newsletter edition, and I was struck once again by her candidness and authenticity. When you chat with Brenda, you get Brenda. Yes, she has led in multiple districts large and small, and as a State Commissioner. Yes, she is the new Milwaukee Superintendent, because she can’t get enough of serving kids and communities. But that’s not what I am talking about. Brenda is up front about who she is, what she knows and what she doesn’t know. That means that you meet the real Brenda in your first conversation. There is something so refreshing during these complex times to just be real, relaxed, and your true self with a friend. Keep this in mind as you listen to her interview. ☺️
We are entering the month of May, which feels like the month of celebration. We have almost made it through another school year, the summer is within reach, and in this political climate we are all thinking about doing something especially nice for ourselves. 🌷And of course, May is the month to celebrate or remember our amazing mothers.
I want to encourage you to include in your summer itinerary a visit to Charleston, South Carolina, where women leaders from around the country will be convening in fellowship to close out the year and plan for the next school year, while building our network of friends. This is an opportunity to be in community with outstanding leaders who match your passion and commitment to serving our nation’s students – all students, no excuses! So, register for the When Women Lead ‘25 policy summit and let’s meet up at the historic Mills House. And you know me…don’t forget your hightop sneakers because after a day of sharing, we will head into Charleston to dine with new friends and share some laughter. I am also excited because our fitness and wellness gurus will be with us, including Dr. Avis Williams, Dr. Zandra Jo Galvan, Denise Schira, Dr. Kendra Washington-Bass, Kelly Peaks Horner, and of course our own Tiana Hill!
If you are looking for inspiration during these challenging times, when you walk into the When Women Lead space this summer, you will be overwhelmed by inspiring women! I want to thank three such leaders, Dr. Sharon Contreras, Emily Ramshaw and Dr. Barbara Mullen who will set the tone for the conference with their bold talks about policy, power, and resiliency.
Join us and be in community!
